Good Music Does a Mama’s Heart Good

Psalm 98

A Psalm.

1 Oh, sing to the LORD a new song!
For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
2 The LORD has made known His salvation;
His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4 Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
5 Sing to the LORD with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
6 With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the LORD, the King.

7 Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
8 Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together
9 before the LORD,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with equity.

I love music.  I love listening to music and singing along and just enjoying music.  But to be honest, since we move here in the fall of 1009, it just has not been a priority for me to get our music organized.  But last week, my heart was pricked that I need to make listening to encouraging music that reflects God’s character a priority in our home.

A dear friend from church, Hannah, gave me a CD of hymn from Bible Truth Music.  She gave it to me in hopes of helping me find simple music we could sing to as a family.  See the post on our children’s hymns.  We listened to it while doing school, sewing and playing games.  We listened to it a few times.  It was refreshing.  Simple playing of classic hymns.  No fancy orchestration.  No fancy singing, just the simple enjoyment of the music that allowed me to focus on the the words to the songs.  Now, that is not what pricked my heart.

Two days later, all four of our girls were on kitchen duty.  The next thing I hear is Abigail leading a choir of young girls voices in the singing of the classic hymns.  Now to be fair, my girls have sung while doing dishes before; it is a joy of this Mama’s heart.  But that day it was different.  The sweetness and gentleness and passion from their little voices brought tears to my eyes.  The pure doctrine they were singing was a good reminder to me to focus on what God has provided for us and what God has already given us.  It reminded me of God’s promises.  And to be honest I was very relieve to hear them singing songs unto the Lord verses complaining about having to do the dishes.

I debated running to get the camera to get it on video, but I knew in my heart doing so would cheapen the experience.  I knew in my heart that this was one of those scenes I would always remember in the corner of my mind.

So I have decided that I am going to purpose to get our music organized on, Lord willing, on my computer for easier access.

With a joyful Mama’s heart,

susan
